The Inaugural Momentum Summit on Martha’s Vineyard on August 9, 2024 brought together philanthropists, foundation leaders and investors to explore the intersection between corporate social responsibility and social justice issues.

FUNDING INNOVATION: The Key to a Locked Door

Tiffani Daniels, Managing Director, Minnesota Business Coalition for Racial Equity (moderator), shared about launching a million-dollar challenge for Minnesota’s First Independence Bank. The campaign actually led to $3.2 million in deposits, which meant the bank can offer more loans to businesses and families looking to buy a home.

James Burroughs, SVP, Government and Community Relations, Children’s Minnesota, discussed the lessons from Minnesota’s public and private sector, while Simone Hardeman-Jones, Managing Director, GreenLight Fund Twin Cities, explained how backing the Let Everyone Advance with Dignity (L.E.A.D.) program, which offers an alternative to policing low-level offenses in the wake of George Floyd’s murder, provided an alternative to additional police involved incidents.

Adrinda Kelly, founding CEO of Black Education for New Orleans, uses storytelling to frame the value of advocating for Black culture in education so funders get it. Chastity Lord, CEO of Jeremiah Program (moderator), shares with donors the importance of investing in single mothers so they have time and space to dream for themselves and their children.

Ruth Richardson, President & CEO of Planned Parenthood North Central States, talked about how to keep the focus on women’s health and safety in a climate where Blackness is under attack.

After a conversation about their long tenures in philanthropy, Wenda Weekes Moore, retired chair of W.K. Kellogg Foundation Board, and La June Montgomery Tabron, current board chair of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, Moore and Tabron presented each other with inaugural 2024 Momentum Awards.

SAY IT LOUD: Centering Conversations on Amplifying Black Women’s Voices in Philanthropy – Video presentation

Chanda Smith Baker, founder and CEO of Smith Baker, LLC and podcaster (moderator) spoke about the need to be willing to have uncomfortable conversations. Alandra Washington, Chief Transformation and Organizational Effectiveness Officer and Carla Thompson Payton, Chief Strategy & Impact Officer, both of W.K. Kellogg Foundation, shared the need to press for more representation in the rooms where important decisions are being made.
